Ways to Give

The Asian Law Caucus is a non-profit organization.  Community, foundation and corporate support of ALC plays a critical role in enabling us to defend civil rights by supporting our legal services, community education and advocacy.

We count on donations from people like you to continue our work on behalf of primarily low-income Asians Americans and Pacific Islanders.  Donations are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  Our tax ID is 94-2176139.

Workplace Giving and Matching Gifts

Over the years, the Asian Law Caucus has greatly benefited from the generosity of our friends and supporters working in law firms, corporations and government agencies.  Again, we hope you will consider a donation through a one-time gift or payroll deductions during the Fall Campaign.

Please designate the Asian Law Caucus on your pledge card.  We are listed in the following campaigns:

Local Independent Charities of America

United Way Campaign

Combined Federal Campaign – #53421

City/County Campaigns in the Bay Area – #L2019

California State Employees Campaign

If your workplace has a matching gifts program, ask for a matching gifts form.  Your participation doubles your donation to the Asian Law Caucus.

Stocks and Planned Giving

There are other options available to contribute to the Asian Law Caucus, and, at the same time, minimize your income tax burden:

– donate appreciated stock

– designate ALC as a beneficiary in your will

– name ALC as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy, IRA or other retirement plans

Cy Pres Awards

Since the underlying purpose of class action litigation is to provide access to the justice system for those who otherwise would not have it, the Asian Law Caucus is an appropriate recipient of Cy Pres funds.  As the first Asian Pacific Islander (API) legal services and civil rights organization in the country — we have a proven track record of 37 years of serving low-income and underserved APIs, and providing high quality services and administration of programs.

Cy Pres is a doctrine and practice of distributing unclaimed class action funds to programs that have a nexus to the underlying purpose of the litigation.  In class action lawsuits, if there is to be a payment of damages to class members, a fund is created.  After class members’ claims are paid, there is often an amount remaining.  Judges and class counsel can recommend that these residual funds be distributed to the “next best” use.

By directing Cy Pres and other court awards to the Asian Law Caucus – including court-approved settlements, sanction awards and criminal restitution –the courts and attorneys can fund services to assist those people in need who otherwise would go without legal representation.

The Asian Law Caucus has received several Cy Pres awards over the years.  It has enabled our organization to expand our work on behalf of the most marginalized communities in the greater Bay Area and the Central Valley.

If you have questions about Cy Pres or other court awards, or if you want to name the Asian Law Caucus as a prospective recipient of such awards, please contact: Audee Kochiyama-Holman, 415-896-1701, ext. 131, audeekh@asianlawcaucus.org
